SPC - Air Supply

We open our tale in an unfinished basement. Two young girls prepare for what will be an exciting hour as they don blue and yellow rollerskates and slip a tape into the recorder. The oldest hits play and as the music swells the girls begin to glide...

"I, I was the lonely one
Wondering what went wrong
Why love had gone
And left me lonely..."

As they skate they begin to argue about which Air Supply member is their boyfriend (they both want the blonde) and the music continues...

"Even the nights are better
Now that were here together
Even the nights are better
Since I found you
Even the days are brighter
When someone you loves beside you
Even the nights are better
Since I found you"

This scene was such a huge part of my little girl summers. Lisa and I would roller skate in our basement listening to either Air Supply's Greatest Hits or ABBA's Greatest Hits. We fancied ourselves so very graceful & talented. So when I had the opportunity to see Air Supply live I jumped at the chance.

Last night me and 3 of my gal pals drove 2 1/2 hours to see them in Orem, Utah. It was such a blast. We sang 70's music all the way there anticipating an evening stroll down memory lane (at least I was). When we got there it was pretty packed. Our tickets were general admission so we found a space at the top of the hill (it was held outdoors) and spread out our blanket. It took forever for things to finally get rolling and I felt really bad for the opening act... he wasn't enthusiastically received, but finally it began. Since there was no one behind us we were able to stand and not block anyone's view. We danced, sang and acted generally like idiots. It was soooo fun! No one else there looked as though they were having fun and perhaps we annoyed people (particularly those sitting in front of us) but who cared!

The glow stick guy (Sean) thought we were awesome and hung out with us. We declared him our "favorite guy!" A couple of buff guys unexpectedly wended their way to us from the other side of the concert and Sherry overheard them say, "We made it and they are still dancing!" It was so hee-larious to watch them dance and sing with us... they looked so tremendously out of place!

The cheese factor was pretty high as well this evening. "Look at the moon... it's beautiful! But not as beautiful as the goddess on the mountain" (us? oh you shouldn't have!) At one point Loralee was overcome with embarrassment for the band and hid her face in Mary Ellen's shoulder but I just decided to roll with it and let the cheese pour over me. And boy oh boy did it! "Do you feel the earth trembling? Can you feel the wind blowing your hair? Close your eyes and life your face skyward! That isn't the earth you feel it's the MUSIC... Let the music fill your soul!..."

At one point in the concert the 2 Air Supply guys started walking in the crowd and we were pretty sure they were trying to get to us but they couldn't make it through all the wannabe's that crowded around them. I was annoyed! Mary Ellen and I had bought red sucker sticks that lit up and we had been waving them seductively. We were positive that the band was impressed. Why wouldn't they have been?

The evening was declared a raging success when after the concert we stopped at a convenience store for water, snacks and diet coke and gentleman walked in and told the clerk that "those girls were at the Air Supply concert and were dancing the whole time!" We are famous (or infamous, I don't know which). Anyway, who would have ever thought that such good times could be had at a 70's rock concert in 2006!?!

Loralee made a kick ass video of our evening. If you'd like to see it go here!
